While it is Quite Important to Generate Jobs and to see to Industry, the present Administration (previously known as government) under India’s #modi is Concentrating on Industry, At the Cost of Farming.
Here is the Saga, a Real one, of a Farmer, Mr. Bala Subramaniam, whose Family for Generations had been Raising Paddy Three times, (the maximum possible), and that is saying something. This means he had Very Good (Arable) Land. Had. Now the former ‘Paddy Soil’ is fit Only for crops like Plantains, a Down-gradation of Many degrees.
As usual, he had been raising not just Paddy. In 2011, the Whole Plantain crop he was cultivating in 2 Acres, After Reaching Near Maturity, Just Toppled like Nine Pins due to Scarcity of Water. That left him in a Loss and Debt of Rs. 7 Lakhs (7 Hundred Thousand!).
He left his whole lands on lease, and has opened a Grocery Store, which he and his wife look after, without help. His store is located near the famed ‘Mariamman’ temple of Kulithalai, shown below.
This next photograph shows the Mariamman temple at right, and his store, with the Blue awning at left.
The Store, per se.
And here are Mrs. and Mr. Bala Subramaniam, ‘manning’ their shop.
I do not know about the Rest of Tamil Nadu, let alone India, but…
It is said that a Whole and Whopping 70% of Farmers have Given up Farming in Our Area.
Is this not a Horrible State of Affairs? What are We going to Eat? MUD?
And the ONLY reason they all point out* is the Unceasing, Day-and-Night Mining of Sand from the Bed of the Cauvery river close by. The River, the Major one of Tamil Nadu, is known as ‘Endrum Vattraatha Cauvery,’ meaning, Cauvery, which Never Runs Dry, could not bear up under the Looting.
*After the recent elections, the People of Tamil Nadu seem to have gained some Confidence and are Speaking Out Openly now, particularly about the Excessive Mining, (We call it Looting!) of Sand from, particularly, the Cauvery bed.

What You see above are Lorries waiting to Carry Away Sand, which is Sold to Other States too, namely Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra, something Which No Other State does. The length of the queue is astonishing! It is not just the inverted 7; at the top left edge, We see another group going about its ‘business!’
Sand is sent even to Faraway Rajasthan.

This is the map for Jaipur in Rajasthan to Trichy in Tamil Nadu. And Krishnarayapuram, which quarry is reserved for Rajasthan, is even farther.
RICH taking for politicians and their relatives. And what happens to the Locals and to Tamil Nadu? No Sand means No Moisture. Which has led to Lakhs of Trees Dying, and the Soil becoming Dry and Lifeless. …As evidenced by the Saga of Mr. Bala Subramaniam.
