Ephesians 1:3-14

This is the second of Paul’s Doxologies to the Trinity. The first being 2 Corinthians 13:13.

Ephesians 1:3-14 (TEV, emphasis mine).

“3 Let us give Thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! For in our union with Christ He has blessed us by giving us Every Spiritual blessing in the Heavenly world.

4 Even before the world was made, God had Already Chosen us to be His, through our union with Christ, so that we would be holy and without fault before Him. Because of His Love 5 God had already decided that through Christ Jesus He would make us His sons – this was His pleasure and purpose. 6 Let us praise God for His glorious grace, for the free gift He gave us in His dear Son!

7 For by the sacrificial death of Christ we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven. How great is the grace of God, 8 which He gave to us in such large measure! In all His wisdom and insight 9 God did what He had purposed, and made known to us the secret plan He had already decided to complete by means of Christ. 10 This plan, which God will complete when the time is right, is to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on earth, with Christ as head. 11 All things are done according to God’s plan and decision; and God chose us to be His own people in union with Christ because of His own purpose, based on what He had decided from the very beginning. 12 Let us, then, who were the first to hope in Christ, praise God’s glory.

13 And You also became God’s people when You heard the true message, the Good News that brought You Salvation. You believed in Christ, and God put His stamp of ownership on You by giving You the Holy Spirit He had promised. 14 The Spirit is the guarantee that we shall receive what God has promised His people, and this assures us that God will give complete freedom to those who are His. Let us praise His glory!”

It is noteworthy that the above, in the original, is written as One sentence. It shows Paul’s Poetic capabilities!

God and The Lord – Synonymous

For the Christian, the words God, and The Lord, are Synonymous. There is No difference between God and The Lord. We are dealing with English, of course. For the Yahwistic and the Elohistic traditions, deeper study is suggested.

*******

On the words God and Lord

The Roman emperors were addressed as the Lord. Rome was the biggest empire of that time. It reigned over Numerous nations. The emperor, and he alone, was called the Lord, signifying that he was the highest personage.

For the Early Christians, to note that Jesus was being given that Name, The Lord, meant He was the Highest too!

Judges, as they held sway over life and death, and as they were considered people of really high degree, have been called ‘My Lord.’ But, right from the beginning of time, judges, for the Most part, have proved themselves Unworthy of it. In any case, worthy or not, I would call it Sacrilegious that a name that is used for God is given to Mere men.

In India, if We find many called ‘Prabhu,’ (Lord) etc, is actually means a Commemoration of the Deity. It is not deifying somebody.

This does not refer to the philosophy of Advaitism.

Nor to the practice of calling people ‘Devata,’ (god), etc. (You will find people saying: “Aap Devata hain,” which is something like saying: “You are a god.”)

God and The Lord Synonymous in the Bible

Let us take the Book of Genesis.

  • In its First chapter, (proceeding slightly into the second, upto verse 4a), the word God is used. Leaving out the Pronouns, God is the Only word used to signify the Divine.
  • In the Second and the Third Chapters, We find the combined words: Lord God.
  • The Fourth chapter uses the words: The Lord, Except once, in verse 25, where the word ‘God’ is used.

Let us proceed to the Book of Exodus now.

The famous Third chapter, where Moses gets his Vision of God, uses Both the words God and The Lord.

All this Amply proves that the words God and The Lord are Synonymous in the Bible, and for Christians.

self love, Christ, and Others!

This post is to show that Christ Jesus Did NOT Teach or Practice self love.

[This is a sequel to: self love is NOT love, and, self love Creates Problems. It would be Best to read this after those.]

I have to go back to the often misquoted saying of Christ’s: “Love Your Neighbour as Yourself.” Mark 12:30-31. And I have to refer to the Interpreters of the same, in this case many catholic priests, who are very much like the Wise Men of Hindostan! All these, Blind as Bats, as they say, when brought in front of an Elephant, said the the creature was Just what they encountered.

In the case of the Interpreters of the words of Christ, they choose to remain with What they Prefer!

Helpful Bible Verses …0001 …Psalm 23:6

Under this title, I begin a New series. The title could have been Bible Verses that Helped me, and that would Very Much be the Truth. I start with Psalm 23:6, which means the 6th verse of the 23rd Psalm. This is one of my Favourites, and one that Helped me Live.

I present my Own translation of the verse:

“Surely, Only Goodness and Kindness, Shall follow me, All the days of my life.”

Now a few words on the verse. ‘Only Goodness and Kindness!’ Is that not an amazing statement? Does life seem so? Would We even Imagine that our lives would be so?

But that Is God’s plan for Us. Given the Freedom and Opportunity (Yes, We Do have the Freedom even to Refuse God!), He Not Only makes Us Realize the Truth, He makes it a Reality in Our lives. I attest to that.

What is Spirituality?

The Human Being is a Creature, a Spirit Encased in a Body. Spirituality is the WAY one lives his/her life.

*******

To Understand Spirituality, one has to be Clear on the Idea of Spirit.

God is Uncreated Spirit. Angels and even evil spirits are spirits, but Created ones. We have to understand that God did Not create evil spirits, but some of the Created spirits chose the evil path, and became so.

We Human beings, Having the Spirit, get separated from the rest of the Spirit-world in that We have a Body. It is Important to Realize that We shall Always have one. When We pass from this life, We shall still have a Body, though it will be Different. The Body Jesus appeared-in after His Resurrection, to His disciples, particularly to Thomas, – coming in when the Doors had all been shut – gives us an Inkling as to How our bodies might be in Our After-life.

Jesus appears to Thomas

Am Indebted to www.lds.org for this Excellent graphic of Christ appearing to Thomas. John 20:24-28.

*******

A Human being is a Composite of Body, Mind and Soul.

The Soul is what I had heard about, and learnt, when I was Young. Not that the word has become Obsolete. And the Soul stands for the Human Beings’ Unique faculty of Knowing and Deciding.

It can be Equally said that We Human beings have these faculties because We possess The Spirit.

Thus, to keep things simple, the Spirit and the Soul become Equated.

*******

God’s Spirit Constantly bestows Love, Blessings and Guidance to Us/Our spirit/Our self. But We, or We can say Our spirit, have the Freedom even to Decline, Refuse or Downright Rebel against the Guidance of God. That is Free Will. All this is the Catholic-Christian point of view.

How We Human beings Choose to exercise Our Free Will, – How ‘Our spirit’ guides Our Lives, is Spirituality.

We can be Uncaring, Unconcerned, Apathetic and Filled with the ‘self,’ and that would be our spirituality.

Walter Scott had asked: ‘Breathes there the man with so dead,’ about love for one’s Mother Land. But I ask: “How do We Breathe, Eat and Live, when Eyes like these Ask Us Questions?

And I am Sure We All know Plenty of people who are Regular Church goers, Great Contributors to the church, …and Looting People Blind.

The Word Spirituality is connected with God, with Religion, with Right and Goodness. In the cases stated above, Can/Will Anybody say the people I have mentioned above are ‘Spiritual?’

St. Paul had said: “For me, to Live is Christ.” He was Christ-Mad! That was his Spirituality. And that Is High Spirituality indeed.

Thus, Spirituality is Not the keeping of rituals. True Spirituality is a Righteous Way of Life.

The Jesus Myth Theory: Investigating Claims of Copying

Is Jesus a Myth?

That’s a question more people are asking, especially after Zeitgeist, the Movie got popular. In this post, my friend, Mary Jo Sharp, shows you 3 simple steps you can use to figure out if Jesus’ story was actually ripped off from other religions. Mary Jo blogs at http://confidentchristianity.blogspot.com

Guest Post by Mary Jo Sharp

An increasing trend in popular and academic circles is to propose that the story of Jesus is a mythical one, copied from the stories of pagan mystery gods such as Osiris and Mithras.  Not only can the claim be found on numerous internet sites and in several popular-level books, but it is also propagated by celebrities such as political satirist, Bill Maher.[1]

On a September 2008 episode of the widely-viewed talk show, The View, Maher stated that Jesus is like the Egyptian god, Horus.  Do these claims have much merit?  In the brief space to follow, I will focus on a method for investigating the stories of the other gods and the story of Jesus.

Let me teach you a simple method for investigation.

#1. Read the stories for yourself

When faced with the question of whether or not the story of Jesus is a copy of another god’s story, you should actually read the stories.  Get a hold of a copy of the Egyptian Book of the Dead or the Hindu Bhagavad Gita and go through the stories for yourself (local college library, some city libraries, online texts).  It’s always a good idea to go to the primary source material so you know the subject being discussed from the source of the discussion.

#2. Take the parallels head-to-head

After reading the stories, investigate the suggested parallel material from those stories.  If someone claims that Mithras died and rose from the dead just like Jesus, see if you can find any resurrection story that mirrors the one of Jesus.  In Mithras’ case, you cannot find a resurrection at all.  Mithras never dies, so he certainly cannot resurrect from the dead.  Osiris is raised to be King of the Dead.  So his raising results in afterlife amongst the dead.

Vague similarities are not going to accomplish much for those who are seeking to be intellectually honest.  Saying that Mithras was “born of a virgin” and Jesus was “born of a virgin” is either too vague or is so strained as to be construed as dishonest reportage.[2]

Mithras sprung forth from a rock (or cave) near a river bank.  He was holding a torch to illumine the underworld from which he came and a dagger to subdue all the creatures of the earth.  Jesus was born as a human baby by a female human virgin.  Osiris was the product of an adulterous affair between two gods.  He fell in love with his sister and had sexual intercourse with her in the womb of his mother goddess.  The only thing similar in these birth stories is the vague similarity of birth itself.

#3. Set everything in context

Some contemporary Christ-myth theorists will use terms like “resurrection” with stories of any god that died and took an afterlife form.  For example, Peter Joseph used “resurrection” to fit his purpose of a side-by-side comparison of several gods in Zeitgeist, the Movie.  Yet, did the people who followed the various gods understand their god to be “resurrected” in the sense of Jesus’ resurrection?

No.  Jesus’ resurrection was an unexpected twist[3] in the Jewish view of the Messiah, as well as in the Jewish view of resurrection.  It was also unexpected according to the pagan understanding of the afterlife; for Jesus was raised to a new, physical body.  The pagans expected a spiritual union with their gods in the afterlife or a freeing of the spirit from bodily imprisonment.  This twist is important, because it has everything to do with the Christian understanding of God’s good creation, his forgiveness, and his gift of salvation.

Jesus’ resurrection stands unparalleled in history when attempting to find stories in which God purposed to pay the penalty for all of mankind’s sin so that man can have a new, changed life.

Jesus died as he expected and predicted, and for the purpose he planned.  Even if a person does not believe in God, he can see this difference between Jesus’ story and the story of the other gods.  Jesus’ resurrection is also the model for the resurrection of all of mankind.  He is “the firstborn of the resurrection.”  The followers of Jesus in the first century up to today have a radically different view of the afterlife and resurrection from their fellow mankind.  This is not something that can easily be overlooked in order to make an accusation of copying from other gods’ stories.  And we have just begun to dig into the differences!

Conclusion

Just like you and I do not want to have our ideas and words ripped out of context and used for someone else’s purposes, we should not take the stories of the ancient gods and of the major world religions out of context to use for our own purposes.  Nor should we be ignoring aspects of the stories that show their vast differences.

The deeper we look into the stories of the gods, the greater the difference we find between them and the story of Jesus.

Too Long have we become used to Merely Celebrating Festivals. Of course Mankind Needs festivities, which are good, but we Want them, Actively desire them, which can become a weakness. Feasts and Festivals, even like those of Christmas and Easter, can become just Means of Entertainment in our lives which become boring with time. Just How are we different from the Hebrews who made a statue of a Calf in gold and went and worshipped it? They had wanted entertainment too!

We all know that Moses Broke the Tablets of the Ten Commandments, and that Much More happened, besides. 3,000 people were Killed. Please read chapter 32 of Exodus. The Important thing is that The Lord Did Not Castigate Moses for doing this. On the contrary, in the same chapter, We will find that He Disowned the Hebrews, and spoke to Moses saying that they were ‘his’ (Moses’) people, and Not His (the Lord’s)!

The Lord Fully Appreciates Enthusiasm, Fire and Zeal. And it was not just in the case of Moses. More on this later.

In this post We shall See:

  • What the Pentecost is; seeing its Jewish and Christian meanings,
  • What its Importance is. What Christ Jesus had said about the Holy Spirit.
  • Some notes On Rev. David Wilkerson, and the Pentecostals, etc,
  • And, What and How We can Draw from the Feast of Pentecost.

What Is the Pentecost:

Historically speaking, the First Pentecost fell on the day when the Jews were celebrating their Harvest Festival. For the Jews it was their Harvest Festival, celebrated seven weeks after the day harvesting began, (Deuteronomy 16:9 and 10).

For Christians, the Original Pentecost was like this: When the day of (the Jewish) Pentecost arrived, The Holy Spirit descended upon Christ’s Disciples with Power and Might, in the form of Tongues of Fire. They were Filled with The Spirit and their Lives Changed. Acts 2:1-12.

Christ’s Disciples had been These kind of men:

Christ’s disciples were Frightened men at that time, Most probably into Hiding. After all, their Leader, whom they had even hoped would be the Very Messiah who would lead them out of the Slavery to Rome, had been Ignominiously and Brutally killed. And that had been the Intention of the Jewish leaders, to Quell any sort of deviation from what they were teaching. It had been accomplished by The Might of Rome! Whereas The Disciples were Very Ordinary folk.

Christ had known all this about his Disciples. There had been No Long drawn out process of applying for it and getting selected. Though Jesus Must have studied them, often times it was a Call On the Spot, Responded to Equally. Most of them were Fishermen. Fishing in the Lake of Galilee. Not Sea goers! Ergo, not big businessmen. Consider Your Fish seller in India. Christ’s Disciples could not have been much different.

Indian fish sellers

In India, the Men catch the fish and the Women sell them. The men help out in the chopping. But most of them Sit on the Floor for their marketing. There You have the Disciples. If somebody expects such simple folks to stand up to the Police of the Temple (of Jerusalem) or the Roman Army, would we not say they have another think coming? But These sorts of men were Transformed!

There is More to this. Only One among them seemed to have qualities of Leadership, the talent of Speaking out. Peter. But, poor man, he had ‘Foot in the Mouth Disease.’

And Pentecost was the Day when these kinds of Simple folks were Transformed into Men for whom their own lives became Secondary from then on. As We shall see.

***

Those sorts of men Started Speaking like This:

Miracles accompanied the Descent of the Holy Spirit. One of them was that those Early Disciples were able to speak in languages unknown to them. Since the Pentecost was a Festival, there was a goodly gathering in Jerusalem. And those gathered were from very different places; the Bible names 16 of them, (Acts 2:9-11). For the Crowd, to hear these Disciples, who were Obviously Jewish – in All those ‘Foreign’ tongues, must have sounded like Blabbering. Many of them termed them Drunk, and Laughed at them.

And This is How Peter responded to the Crowd: “YOU Killed Him (Jesus) by letting sinful men Crucify Him. But GOD raised Him from Death.” Acts 2:23-24.

Let us see the same verse in a different light:

GOD raised Him from Death. But YOU (are the ones who had) Killed Him by letting sinful men Crucify Him.”

This is Serious Stuff. Something that would get Us Lynched. It is not only a question of making the Crowd partners in Crime, that too Murder, but Peter places them in Opposition to God!

Christ’s Disciples Continued to speak in that light, and continue to speak like that Today, in Spite of Getting Persecuted and even Killed for that. That is Some Power. Out of Christ’s 12 Apostles (Disciples), 11 were Killed, and Died a Violent Death.

OUR Situation is like that of Christ’s Disciples Before Pentecost

Even today, there are even Countries which persecute Christians. china seems to lead in the destruction of churches. One image below.

Church destroyed in china

In russia, they have conveniently ‘converted’ churches into ‘museums’ and what not.

The site Clearly states that the church/cathedral is used as a museum. Great is Religious freedom in russia. Wonder how it will be taken if ‘communism’ comes to India and temples are converted into museums!

In India, since the coming of the new regime under the ‘BJP,’ churches and holy artefacts have been damaged and vandalized, but who gets blamed? Rowdy elements. As if rowdy elements have Any interest in damaging Religious things. An image below, of a Church Vandalized in Delhi.

Vandalized Church in Delhi

Can this be the Result of Anything But Organized Vandalism?

My purpose in presenting all that data and images is Not to incite Religious hatred or Retaliation. There have been Criminal Stupidities in Christianity, in the form of, particularly the Inquisition, misguided Crusades, the Ku Klux Klan and other such, the Christian mega rich who loot the world, Christian countries fighting among themselves – like the UK and Ireland, UK over the Falkland, …in Bosnia, …Not to say the Greed for Money on the part of Our religious leaders, the list can be Very long.

But on the whole  Christians are taught, and Expected to be Peaceful. This frequently allows Majority groups of Any place to persecute them. And That is the Situation.

***

It would take Real Power to Remain Calm; and Yet, Not be just Concerned, but Actively So, bringing about Positive Changes into Life and the World.

The Power is Available; God Wants to Give that to His Children. But Most Christians are Satisfied with Merely celebrating the Festivals.

Christians, as I said, are Expected to Remain at Peace. But they seem to Misunderstand this as Sitting on Arm-Chairs, and Remaining Inactive. Apathetic. Horribly Wrong understanding.

We Can and We Should Always Better Ourselves. We would do well to do that. There is a Need for that. Think of the Water Situation. Buying Water to Drink, even while at Home, is becoming a Norm. And in the Mighty USA, it seems that they are Rationing Water in California, and who knows where else. And we Refuse Even to Think about these things. Would we Dare to think Just How this situation would be in Our Grand children’s time?

Christ had called for a Change of Heart, Mind and Behaviour. He had used the word: ‘Metanoia.’ Which means Being Ready to make a U-Turn in our Lives.

CHANGE – IS – ABSOLUTELY – DIFFICULT.

Yet We are called to make that Change, particularly in Our Way of Life, Our Moral Life and Our Value Systems, etc. Whereas Christ’s Disciples, having Constantly been with Him for a handsome period of Three Years, did not have much in their ‘moral lives’ that needed changing. What they Needed was Guts, Gumption and Courage, as We do!

What Christ Jesus had said about the Holy Spirit

Reading the Bible should Not be like reading the newspaper, – something to pass the time, something that helps Us ‘Swallow’ Our Breakfast! Keeping that Well in mind, let us See Christ’s words on the Holy Spirit.

“I will ask the Father, and He will give You Another HELPER, Who will Stay with You For Ever!” John 14:16. Our Lord is Well Aware that He could not stay with us forever in His Earthly form. At the same time He Well Knows our Need for a Helper. And He Arranges it. The Holy Spirit is A Helper Who will be with us Always.

“The HELPER, the Holy Spirit, …Will Teach You Everything and Make You Remember.” John 14:26. The Holy Spirit, the God of Power, not only makes Drug Addicts give up their slavery to it, (see below), but also Helps in common and small things. As I saw.

When I was studying Theology, I was past 35, and I had passed a hard life before that. Coming from a working situation to Studying for Hours in Classes, not to say later in my cubicle, was telling on me. I prayed to the Spirit, and Got the Strength to study!

The Pentecost and Fire!

Or should I say The Holy Spirit and Fire! It is not just that the Bible says that the Holy Spirit came upon Christ’s Disciples on Pentecost day in the form of tongues of Fire. We will find Frequent Allusions to Fire whenever the Holy Spirit is mentioned.

The Holy Spirit and Fire

[For all the Fire, the Holy Spirit is often shown as a Dove in Christian spirituality.]

Spirituality gets Embedded in Songs, very often and very Much! Let us see how the Idea of the Holy Spirit as Fire comes out in Christian songs. Below, the lyrics of one of my Favourite songs (as I remember it!).

“Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit,

Set our Hearts on Fire…

Holy Spirit Set our Hearts on Fire, (2)

Come Holy Spirit, Let Your Fire fall.

Let Your Fire fall, Let Your Fire fall.”

What is important is that a search for such songs gives more than 1.8 Million results!

Search results for Holy Spirit as Fire

The Holy Spirit as FIRE is Ingrained in Christian Spirituality.

……. The Love of God is expressed in terms of Fire too, in Song, as this Very Old, Great Favourite of mine: “To Jesus Heart all Burning, with Fervent Love for men… etc.” And in Art, as Under, in this Beautiful portrayal:The Sacred Heart

The Heart is considered the seat of Love. Artists show Jesus’ Love for us as a Heart surrounded with Thorns, – bearing our Pains; and on Fire in Love for us.

But We prefer our INSIPIDITY, LETHARGY, and APATHY. What is Worse is that we think that we are the wise ones.

Do We Not Look Down on our Fiery ones? Do We not Avoid them?

“The Lord is a Consuming Fire.” Deuteronomy 4:24.

“God’s Judgement is like a Fire that Burns for Ever.” Isaiah 33:14.

Christ’s Teachings have been called ‘Too Hard,’ right during His times! John 6:60.

On Rev. David Wilkerson, and the Pentecostals

The Spirit is making things happen; in this our day and age. Rev. David Wilkerson (May 19, 1931 – April 27, 2011), was a Pastor, who was Very much moved by the Spirit. I happened to read his ‘The Cross and the Switch blade’ during my Youth. In the book he had described how Drug Addicts were healed of their Addiction. Subsequent to reading his book, I found that the ‘Teen Challenge’ existed, and exists to this day. I also found that Nicky Cruz (born December 6, 1938) whom Rev. Wilkerson describes in his book is a Real person. (There is a large amount of material available about them in the net).

David Wilkerson and Nicky Cruz

[Two of my Favourite Real Life Christians, Late Rev. David Wilkerson and Nicky Cruz.]

I started to believe in Drug Addicts getting healed of their Addiction after finding out all these details. And this is something Extremely Powerful. Even Alcoholism is Nothing compared to Drug Addiction.

That was the time when I had started to Read the Bible (c 1969). I came across passages like Matthew 10:1 and 8, etc, where we see the Lord giving His Disciples Enormous Powers. Coming across Rev. Wilkerson’s book was a God send, indeed.

I started Reading the Bible in Earnest, and started practising what I learnt, and Found Miracles happening! The Healing of my Friend, Raymond Richard’s son of Blood Dysentery in Gorakhpur, when the Doctors in All three major hospitals there washed their hands off the case, was the First miracle the Good Lord allowed through my hands. It was All His work, of course. Nothing mine.

The Pentecostal Experience is Needed Today

Years ago I heard of a young woman who was vomiting Blood. The doctors had said that they could not do anything for her. Her mother was taking care of this young woman, but she was tired out, so that many a time she did not even have the energy to clean up after her daughter. Many people had come and prayed for her. But there had been no improvement.

Then a group of Pentecostals arrived, who surrounded the young woman, and prayed in what sounded like Thunder. The young woman was healed that day due to their prayers. I am not saying that We should all become Pentecostals, (I am not one), nor that We should pray as loud as thunder.

But that Faith, that Conviction, that things will happen if we pray, and the Courage to pray like that, the Willingness, Readiness and the Very Habit of praying like that, is Not to be seen in Most Christians.

Or maybe we are ready to pray for sicknesses, but do not bother about Social maladies. These we claim to leave to the Lord. Or maybe we Pray, but Do not have the Strength for Action. …The Disciples were not sitting in their room all the while, after all. They were Extremely Active. Thomas travelled all the way to India.

We are Millions of miles away from what our Lord had expected; That We are the Light and the Salt of the Earth. We are Supposed to be that, anyway!

Things happen, and We Retreat, to our TV rooms, and Reach out for that ‘Peg.’ Peg is right indeed! This is not how life is supposed to be.

Power is Offered to All of Us. We are not all called to perform Healings. But To Face life, and To Live it Powerfully, We Need the Gift of the Holy Spirit. A Pentecostal Experience. And It is there for the Asking.

***

How to Receive the Spirit?

Let us see what Jesus said about this:

“Having your Weaknesses, you Still know how to give Good things to your children. Know that your heavenly Father is Even more ready to give the Holy Spirit to Anyone who asks.” Luke 11:13, my Own Translation.

That’s it. We have to make ourselves As worthy as possible to Receive Him, of course. And we should see that We are Not going to Use this Gift of His presence for selfish reasons or gimmicks.

Let Us Ask for the Lord to Come into Our Hearts Once again. Or in a Greater Measure. Acts 4:31 says: “When they finished praying, they were all Filled with the Holy Spirit.” Let us remember that the Holy Spirit had Already come down upon them as described in chapter 2. The instance I am quoting happens in chapter 4!

Let us Pray That He Melt Us, Mold Us, Fill Us and Use Us, as the song says. And Break Us, if necessary. We need not worry. Even if He does that, He knows How to do it Gently. We NEED the Pentecostal Experience and the Holy Spirit for Enthusiasm and Zeal in Our lives. We Need the Pentecost On-a-Day-to-Day-Basis.

The Bible and History

In places, the Bible is Astonishingly Accurate with regard to History. And Jesus’ Existence, and that of Many personages and events, are Proved by Evidence, in the form of Writings and even Rock Etchings, Totally Unconnected to the Bible.

The Historicity of Persons and Events in the Bible are found to be Particularly Accurate from the ‘The Era of Kings,’ which began in the history of Israel from the time of King Saul. David and Solomon, who followed Saul, are more known, of course.

A site that accuses Israel of demolishing Palestinian houses, apjp.org, neither Pro-Christian nor Pro-Israeli, gives the following photograph:

City of David

In this, the City of David is shown in Red. By the site. What it boils down to is this: Nobody contests that the City of David has existed. Nor is anybody contesting the existence of King David. These are Accepted as History. And David, and his city, Jerusalem, are Central to the Bible.

‘The massive destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians is apparent both in the layers of charred remains and in the thick layer of rubble from collapsed buildings found on the eastern slope of the City of David. This vivid archeological evidence sheds light on the biblical description of the destruction of Jerusalem in 587-6 BCE. (2 Kings 25:8-10; Jeremiah 39:8; 2 Chronicles 36:18-19)’

If I say that my Great-Great-Greatest Grandfather had built this enormous palace on the banks of the river Amazon, and bring You two bricks and piece of pottery, I wonder if You would accept that as Historical evidence. The Archaeology of the Bible is one that is the Greatest studied, and having the Richest Findings.

It should be Extremely Difficult to Prove the existence of Persons who were said to have lived Hundreds of years ago. But I shall show You the Proof of two such persons.

Jehu, of 1 Kings 19:16-17, and 2 Kings 9, becomes colourful and notorious as he is the One king of Israel whose picture We have today! The proof for the existence of Jehu is found in what is called the ‘Black Obelisk,’ at present in the British museum. This is an Assyrian artefact, originally from the present Iran-Iraq area.

The Black Obelisk

This has 20 panels in all, all describing the tributes that Shalmaneser III of Assyria had collected. In what is known as the Jehu panel, a Bearded king, in his royal dresses, is seen kneeling in front of the Assyrian king. Behind the Israelite king are Hebrews bearing gifts.

The writings above the etchings describe the events.

2 panels of Black Obelisk

Here is a larger graphic of the same:

Jehu at feet of Shalmaneser

I was able to get a much clearer picture of the above! And here it is:

Jehu and Shalmaneser III

*******

The Bible does mention Jehu’s defeat at the hands of Hazael, king of Syria, but does Not mention Jehu paying tribute to Shalmaneser. But Assyrian history records it. Shalmaneser had defeated Hazael, and collected tribute from the kings of Tyre and Sidon.

Shalmaneser III tyre sidon

The map above shows the South Eastern part of the Assyrian empire touching the Lake of Galilee, which is in Israel! Jehu would have found it Prudent to pay tribute to Shalmaneser.

Assyrian methods of history, referring to not only to the events in the life of the monarch, but also cross referring them to the Solar Year, Solar Eclipses, etc, make them one of the very Best. Below is a clearer view of Jehu at the feet of Shalmaneser.

Finally, in the usual manner of Archaeological finds, though it is disputed that Jehu was the king alluded to in the Obelisk, in the end they all come to agree that he was the one. Jehu had reigned for 28 long years, between 841 and 814 BCE, and Shalmaneser III between 858 and 824 BCE. They all dovetail.

Thus, when the Bible speaks of Jehu and his actions, the Bible is recording History. Though there is Much in General History that proves the existence and deeds of other kings of Israel, none is as clear nor as interesting as Jehu’s.

*******

For Proof of the second personage, I shall take The Existence of Christ Jesus Himself. I have already shown that His Crucifixion was recorded by Two, Non Biblical writers, namely, Tacitus, and Flavius Josephus.

The former mentions Tiberius, and they Both name (Pontius) Pilate. Already We have Cross References! No source comes forth to deny the existence of the Roman emperor Tiberius. Nor is Pontius Pilate being the Procurator/Governor of Judaea ever questioned.

To have been Crucified under these (Roman) authorities, as recorded by the above named Non-Biblical authors, Jesus Christ must have existed. And Thus, Not just the Bible, but what is General History Attests to the fact that Jesus Christ Existed on Earth at the time stated in the Bible.

If somebody would like to state that these historians refer to Some other person named Christ, then We give them Tacitus’ quote: “Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin…”

It would be Too Much to say that Another person named Christ, (who was not the Christ of the Bible), who had a following called Christians, was Crucified under Pontius Pilate, at precisely same time, would it not? 🙂

Further, One of the MOST Historical and Interesting passages in the whole of the Bible occurs in the Gospel of Luke, 3:1-2. In just 2 verses Luke packs 24 Details, as I shall show! Let us see what he has written:

“It was the Fifteenth year of the rule of the Emperor Tiberius; Pontius Pilate was the Governor of Judaea, Herod was the ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip was ruler of the territory of Iturea and Trachonitis; Lysanias was ruler of Abilene, and Annas and Caiaphas were high priests. At that time the word of God came to John, son of Zechariah in the desert.”

The Underlined words are the details. They shall further be classified as:

  • Names of Persons: Tiberius, Pontius Pilate, Herod, Philip, Lysanias, Annas, Caiaphas, John, Zechariah. (Nine).
  • What they were: Emperor, Governor, ruler (3), high priests. Governor is called governor, and king is called that. No Mixups. …And, This was the Only time the Jews had Two High priests at the same time. The Jewish list of high priests agrees with this, the time period included, namely: 18-36 CE. Christ’s Crucifixion is conventionally placed at 33 CE.
  • Names of Places: Judaea, Galilee, Iturea and Trachonitis, Abilene, (and the desert). (Five Important ones). This is Important. For example, at one time, the Iran Iraq area was known as Assyria, then Babylon, and then, after some time, Assyria again. Dynasties changed and so did the name of the place. Luke has used the correct names.
  • And Relationships: brother, son.

All the people stated above, Existed At the Time stated by Luke, and In the Manner presented by him. Would it have been possible that a bunch of people who were mostly Simple Fishermen had had the Intelligence, Know how, and Whatever else was required to put All these facts together, in the Exact Sequence and Order?

And the Bible has Many More Provable, and thus Historical Instances, like these. The Archaeology of the Bible is a Fascinating Subject, and even the Net offers Quite a lot indeed for those who are interested!

Ezekiel’s Vision of God

In his first chapter, the prophet Ezekiel describes his Vision of God. When We read the account, We are Not sure whether We are standing Straight, or on Our Heads!

God Experience is No Simple thing. Shankaracharya himself has described it as An Elephant getting into a Tent. Since I could not get a satisfactory image of that, am presenting You one of ‘The Bull in the China Shop!’ No Irreverence is intended. God is the Creator of Humour too, and would want that We Smile!

Bull in a China Shop

The point is that The Poor Human Brain has the Hardest time in coping with God Experience, As the Shankaracharya himself witnessed. This happened to Ezekiel too, as We shall see further. For all that, he went on to complete 48 great chapters.

*******

Let us go to Ezekiel’s Vision now:

  • He starts off, in Verse 1 of his First chapter, by saying that he had a Vision of God.
  • Taking only the Salient points, in Verses 4 and 5, he sees a Storm, and, in that, Four Living Creatures in Human Form; but,
  • (Each of these Human forms) Having Four Faces and Four Wings! Verse 6. (Howzzat! Pretty cool vision of GOD, huh? But it goes further).
  • They had Hoofs like those of a Bull! Verse 7.
  • Among the Creatures was Something that looked like A Blazing Torch, Verse 13.
  • The Creatures Darted to and fro with the speed of lightning. Verse 14.
  • Then he saw Four Wheels! Verse 15.
  • Each Wheel had another Intersecting it at Right Angles. Verse 16.
  • The Rims of the Wheels were Covered with EYES. Verse 18.
  • And, towards the end, “a figure that looked like a Man!Verse 26. Surrounded by Dazzling light and all that.
  • And Finally Ezekiel says that This Dazzling Light showed the Presence of the Lord. Verse 28.

But, Wheels Intersecting at Right angles? Wheels covered with Eyes? Symbolism, for Sure. But Ezekiel had it tough, and makes it Tough.

My recounting above is Not to make a Mockery of the Word of God, but to show that the Man of God having a Vision has the Hardest Time even grasping it. And then, as in these cases, he is expected to Convey it!

And it was not Ezekiel alone. The Great Isaiah says: “I am Doomed; I have seen the Lord God Almighty.” (Isaiah 6:5).

Moses and Daniel fall flat on their faces.

There is a Very Important Lesson in all this:

The Prophet had to Use his Human faculties to Imbibe, Register, Remember, Recall and Recount his Experiences.

As such, one cannot Rush into the seeming meanings of words or passages. Ezekiel’s account of his Vision of God is Ample Proof of that.
